Day 2 in Auckland

We started our day with a treat--no, not the yummy breakfast pies from the Pie Face shop.  The treat was some Facetime with my boy.  :)

On this sunny, warm Monday, we took a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland to pretty Waiheke Island. About 8,000 people live there, many of them in the wine-making business.  On our bus tour of the island were people from Australia, France, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and more.  Pretty cool.  Besides the tourists, Auckland is a very diverse city.  In fact, it has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. We've really enjoyed hearing so many languages all around us.

Our evening was really special, too.  I have a friend, Jackie, who lives in Auckland.  She's an American, married to Ben, who's a New Zealander.  They picked us up this evening and gave us a tour of some really pretty parts of the city, including an amazing sunset view of Auckland from near Ladies Bay.  We had dinner together, and then they drove us to the top of Mount Eden for a gorgeous night-time view of the city lights. What a treat to reconnect with someone I haven't seen in years.  :-)
